Dr. Marcel DvorakDr. Marcel Dvorak

Recipient of the CSS Lifetime Achievement Award for 2026

On May 9, 2025 the spinal community lost a remarkable man, a devoted father and husband, a pioneering surgeon, and an inspirational leader – Dr. Marcel Dvorak.

Dr. Dvorak was a towering figure in the field of spine surgery locally, nationally and on the international stage. He directly helped thousands of patients with his surgical expertise, influenced many more as an educator and mentor to his trainees, and improved the lives of millions through ground-breaking research and visionary thinking. As the head of the VGH Spine Program he initiated and lead the creation of the VGH Blusson Spinal Cord Center, an innovative and integrated hub that brought together state of the art patient care and world class research under one roof. Nationally he educated thousands and established a multicenter research network and registry to advance spinal cord injury research. Internationally his greatest impact unfolded; Dr. Dvorak lead global key opinion leaders in spine trauma, spearheading research and education that fulfilled his life’s mission – to improve patient care around the world.

Dr. Dvorak was not just a colleague of mine for 30 years, but a true friend as he was for many of us in the CSS. I can think of no one more deserving of the CSS Lifetime Achievement Award. This acceptance letter, shared by Dr. Dvorak’s family on his behalf, further solidifies how truly deserving he was of this award.

Acceptance Letter from the Dvorak Family on behalf of Dr. Marcel Dvorak who was honoured posthumously with the CSS Life Time Achievement Award.

I am honoured to accept, on behalf of my late husband, Dr. Marcel Dvorak, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Canadian Spine Society.

In bestowing this honour upon Dr. Dvorak and his legacy, you bestow a blessing of comfort upon me, his wife of 34 years, and especially upon our six young-adult children. In our grief of missing Marcel so terribly the past ten months, it’s a joy and a comfort to have him be recognized, honoured and celebrated as we think of him daily.

We saw, up close, how much Marcel loved and poured himself into the work, both the art and the science, of contributing to clinical care, research, education and leadership in the advancement of spine care in Canada and around the world. As his family, we are amazed by and proud of all Marcel achieved during his career, incredible in quality, volume, and impact.

You acknowledge Marcel’s passion, tireless efforts, dedication, and intuitive leadership, in pursuit of the shared mission of the CSS;  we were blessed to experience the same in Marcel as he lived his vocation with us as an extraordinary husband and father.

We know well, first-hand in fact, to quote the Award Nomination Letter, that “Marcel was a mentor who saw things in people often before they saw it in themselves. He was equally a steadying force in moments of uncertainty, and an unsteadying force in moments of complacency. He could be a voice of reason in times of challenge, and a voice of agitation in times of calm. Ultimately, he pushed all of us who knew him to aim higher, to think deeper, and to care more.”

Marcel was the same for us, his family: aim higher, think deeper, care more. He was equal parts playful fun-loving and intense as hell, in the very best way, and we love him for it.

In receiving this Award on Marcel’s behalf, I would like to pass it symbolically to his children. They are all making their way in their own careers and personal lives with the gift of their father’s ideas, faith, guidance, his very DNA, but mostly his love. Marcel loves our children fiercely, always deeply curious about each one as individuals, dependable, interested in their interests – an inspiring, loving father and mentor who guides them still.

How great a thing, to live life with such wholeness and authenticity as to be honoured by colleagues and loved by family for the exact same reasons.

We thank the Canadian Spine Society for recognizing Dr. Marcel Dvorak and his enduring legacy of contribution to the advancement of spine care by awarding him the Lifetime Achievement Award.

We thank the CSS too for the gift of what this recognition means to us, his family.

In gratitude, Sue Dvorak, and Emily, Adam, Madeline, Eva, Levi and Veronica Dvorak
