This will be a locum position covering the elective spine practice of a surgeon on leave for 11 months : from March 17, 2025 to March 2nd, 2026.

Fellowship Overview:

We are seeking highly motivated and dedicated candidates for a one-year spine fellowship program. This fellowship offers comprehensive training in spinal surgery, with a focus on cutting-edge techniques, complex case management, and multidisciplinary care. Fellows will work alongside two orthopaedic surgeons and four neurosurgeons as part of our integrated spine service. Fellows will meet before the beginning of the fellowship with the program director and tailor their year based on their expectation and needs. We are performing the full spectrum of spine surgery, including minimally-invasive techniques, adult deformity corrections, tumor resections, trauma care, and intradural surgeries. The candidate is expected to contribute to both clinical and research initiatives while developing advanced skills in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of spinal pathologies.

Since the fellowship program is based in a French institution, the candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the French language, spoken and written, in accordance with the politics of Université Laval for out-of-province candidates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in a diverse range of spine procedures in the OR ;
  • Assist in the management of complex spine cases, including preoperative planning, intraoperative assistance, and postoperative care ;
  • Provide direct patient care in outpatient clinics, inpatient settings, and multidisciplinary spine clinics ;
  • Engage in multidisciplinary discussions with neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, pain specialists, radiologists, and physical therapists ;
  • Participate in spine-related clinical research projects and contribute to academic publications and presentations. Fellows are required to submit at least one manuscript for publication as a requirement of their fellowship ;
  • Attend weekly conferences, journal clubs, and educational seminars to further knowledge in spinal pathologies and surgical techniques.

Postdoctoral fellowship

The CHUM Spine Research Unit is involved in three research axes of the CRCHUM, namely the Health Innovation and Evaluation Hub, Cancer axis and the Imaging and Engineering axis. The team focuses on research in spine surgery care. Several collaborations have been established with the Laboratoire d’imagerie en orthopédie and the École Polytechnique de Montréal. In addition, the Spine Research Unit actively participates in research protocols of the Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network (CSORN).

Job description

The research unit is involved in research evaluating the care of patients with adult and pediatric scoliosis as well as in the imaging analysis of patients with adult scoliosis and spinal deformity. We also have an interest improving the organization of care for patients with scoliosis. In addition, the unit has also a focus in the multidisciplinary management of patients with spinal tumors as well as outcomes research. The candidate will be an integral member of the team and will have an interest in this area to successfully lead research projects to publication.

Responsibilities

Several options are available to the candidate. The objective of this postdoctoral fellowship is to develop the skills necessary to lead independent research and manage a research unit at the level expected of a junior academic researcher at a university. The candidate will be closely involved in the development of research projects as well as grant applications. The topics available to the candidate are: the prediction and evolution of pediatric scoliosis in adults, the prediction of post-operative posture and the registration of imaging in the prone and standing position as well as the trajectory of care for patients with scoliosis or adult spinal deformity. The candidate will be responsible for developing a research project on one of these topics and leading it to publication. The candidate will also be responsible for guiding undergraduate and post-graduate master’s level students related to these subjects.

  • Experience in clinical research, imaging analysis, public health experience and experience in spine surgery is an asset for this position.

We perform approximately 1200 spine cases per year.The spine fellowship is structured to allow fellows to rotate for 2-3 blocks with each spine surgeon at the University of Manitoba. The fellows will also be expected to participate in on-call duties.The Winnipeg Spine Program has created a robust educational curriculum to fulfill the needs of modern spine training. The Divisions of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada have two fellowship positions available in Spine Surgery. This high-volume fellowship is based at the Hamilton General Hospital (HGH) site of Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) which is a busy academic tertiary center for Neurosciences serving a catchment population of over 2.5 million Ontarians.

The fellowship is structured to allow trainees to rotate with surgeons in both Divisions. It is expected that the fellow will participate in over 300 spine surgeries per year. The fellowship will provide exposure to the full spectrum of spine surgery including degenerative pathology; deformity; trauma; metastatic tumors; primary tumors; infections; intradural pathology; and minimally invasive techniques. Hands-on learning is enhanced by a robust curriculum including didactic lectures, weekly spine rounds, M&M rounds and journal clubs. A contemporary and evidence-based approach to spine surgery will be emphasized throughout the fellowship.

Fellows will participate actively in research and academic activities and will be expected to complete two research projects during their fellowship year resulting in publication.

Candidates must have successfully completed an Orthopaedic or Neurosurgical residency and qualify for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. All Fellows must be approved by McMaster University. Foreign Fellows will require a work visa. This will be processed by McMaster University and requires at least six months lead-time.

The fellows will be involved in both surgical and nonsurgical care of patients, and participate in the teaching of residents, along with one of the six spine surgeons (Drs Khoueir, Jodoin, Labelle, Mac-Thiong, Maurais, Parent). At the pediatric hospital, emphasis is placed on the treatment of spinal deformity and spondylolisthesis. Training at the Level-1 trauma adult hospital encompasses a wide variety of spinal pathology, including trauma, deformity, tumors, and degenerative diseases of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. The fellows will also gain exposure with the attending staff in the neurosurgical department. Fellows will be exposed to both anterior and posterior approaches, as well as minimally invasive techniques such as thoracoscopy and minimal access surgery. Typically, the fellows will spend 2 days in the OR, 2 days in the clinic, and one full day for research. Weekly didactic educational conferences are also scheduled. Each fellow will participate in at least one clinical research project under the supervision of one of the three spine clinician-scientists. Basic science (imaging, biomechanics or molecular biology) research projects are also available. Applicants committed to an academic track will be highly considered. The duration of the fellowship is one year (August 1 to July 31) and the stipend is 40000$. French speaking is requested.

Job Summary

Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH) is seeking a full-time Orthopedic Surgeon with an Adult Spine subspecialty. The successful candidate must also be comfortable with general orthopedics as they will participate in the general orthopedic call roster (1:9), covering for adult and pediatric patient populations.

This person will join a group of 8 full-time orthopedic surgeons, including one orthopedic spine surgeon, and others covering most other orthopedic subspecialties. The operating room is equipped with a Spinal Navigation System (including Ziehm intra-op 3D imaging). Training and experience with MIS techniques would be an asset, but not a requirement. Fellowship in adult spine surgery is requested.

SMH is a tertiary teaching Hospital and Level III trauma center with a very busy Emergency Department. It is affiliated with the University of British Columbia (UBC) Department of Orthopedics.

The Division of Neurosurgery in Victoria, BC has two fellowship positions available in Spinal and General Neurosurgery to start August of the coming year. The Fellowship will allow exposure to many aspects of of complex spine surgery including minimally invasive techniques, trauma, and adult spinal deformities. The fellow will have ongoing involvement in general neurosurgery including management of neurooncology and cerebrovascular pathology. The Fellow will participate in clinical, research, and operative activities. There are no on call requirements other than for surgical assisting. Duke Neurosurgery at Duke University Medical Center is accepting applications for the post-graduate fellowship in Spine Surgery for the period of July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2106.  Established in 2013, the fellowship focuses on comprehensive exposure to all aspects of spine surgery including minimally invasive and open approaches to treating adult degenerative, complex deformity and oncology.  In addition to 3 fellowship trained spine surgeons, fellows will benefit from exposure to outstanding Orthopaedic spine faculty as well.  Applicants should have completed an accredited US or Canadian neurosurgery residency in good standing and be ABNS-eligible.
