The Department of Orthopedics at BC Children’s Hospital invites applications for a full-time academic Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon in the areas of pediatric spinal deformities. BC Children’s serves as the major referral centre for infants and children throughout British Columbia and the Yukon (a region with a population of 5.1 million).

The successful candidate will have an interest in the orthopaedic management of children with spinal deformity conditions. The candidate will have completed a residency in orthopedic surgery, will be a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and will be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. The ideal candidate will have completed a fellowship in pediatric and adult spinal surgery with a focus on care of children with adolescent idiopathic, early onset, neuromuscular, congenital, and syndromic scoliosis as well as spondylolysis/listhesis, cervical spine disorders, and other associated conditions.

The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary team of professional and administrative staff. This will involve the collaborative assessment and treatment planning using a family centred care model in the delivery of surgical care of patients and their families. The candidate will be expected to take part in both pediatric orthopedic trauma call and the separate pediatric spine call. The successful candidate will have an interest in research and clinical outcome evaluation. It is preferred that candidates should have completed or intend to complete a master’s degree or higher in business administration, clinical epidemiology, medical education, global health or health sciences. The successful candidate will also have shown an interest in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate levels. The ability to perform collaborative research with other members of the team, and with other faculty members at the University of British Columbia and beyond is expected.

The Neurosurgery Division at the University of Alberta is committed to the improvement of health through excellence in patient care, leadership in education and research, and in preventative initiatives directed at the promotion of neurological well-being. The Division of Neurosurgery provides comprehensive neurosurgical services for a wide geographic area serving a population of well over two million people. Within the division, every neurosurgical subspecialty is represented with growing volumes across the disciplines. The University of Alberta Hospital is a state-of-the-art neurosurgical center with 2-3 neurosurgical operating rooms daily, an integrated pediatric hospital and operating room, intraoperative MRI, neurosurgery led gamma knife facility, an intraoperative CT scanner at each site for navigated spine cases and a soon to open Brain center housing an advanced neurologic intensive care and observation unit.

Complex spinal surgery is performed at both the University of Alberta Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital with the successful candidate having a clinical footprint at each site. Additionally, there may be an expectation to perform routine spinal surgery at other sites in the city. Emphasis will be placed on candidates with demonstrated excellence in both operative and non-operative clinical care.

The successful candidate will be expected to hold a Clinical Academic Colleague appointment in the Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery, University of Alberta. The position includes a 70% commitment to clinical practice including participation in a general neurosurgery, complex spine on-call program, and non-classroom clinical teaching. A 30% commitment to classroom teaching, research and administration is also required. The spine program is a combined neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery program and participates in several registries and clinical trials. Involvement with a leadership role in the Royal Alexandra Spine Assessment clinic that investigates and conducts innovative ways to provide timely spine care is also required. Interest in clinical research in terms of the Canadian Spine Outcomes Research Network and clinical trial recruitment is required. Interest in basic science research and quality improvement initiatives are also welcomed.

Applicants must hold an MD or equivalent, with completed training in Neurosurgery, and must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. The successful candidate must have obtained the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Fellowship in Neurosurgery. The candidate should have completed a fellowship in complex spine surgery. Preference will be given to applicants who hold a Masters’ Degree or PhD designation. Position Summary
The Spine Surgery group of Canada East Spine Centre in Saint John, New Brunswick is seeking a skilled and dedicated Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) Technologist to support complex spinal and select cranial surgeries. You will perform real-time neurophysiological monitoring and contribute to a nationally recognized academic and research-focused environment. This full-time role includes occasional, emergent after-hours coverage and the opportunity, if desired, to participate in clinical research.

Summary of Duties
Consult with surgeons and anesthesiologists regarding patient risks and IONM modalities
Clearly communicate the IONM procedure to patients preoperatively
Place and verify all electrodes per established protocols
Monitor multimodal waveforms (SSEP, MEP, EMG, etc.) during surgery
Provide timely feedback to the surgical team on patient status
Upload and maintain surgical logs accurately
Maintain IONM equipment and report any technical issues
Apply appropriate monitoring protocols; troubleshoot signal issues as needed
Keep current with literature and best practices in IONM
Participate in occasional, emergent after-hours cases

Qualifications & Skills
M.Sc. or PhD. in Health or Biological Sciences (e.g., Kinesiology, Neuroscience) — mandatory
IONM Graduate Certificate required; CNIM certification preferred

Fellowship Overview:

We are seeking highly motivated and dedicated candidates for a one-year spine fellowship program. This fellowship offers comprehensive training in spinal surgery, with a focus on cutting-edge techniques, complex case management, and multidisciplinary care. Fellows will work alongside two orthopaedic surgeons and four neurosurgeons as part of our integrated spine service. Fellows will meet before the beginning of the fellowship with the program director and tailor their year based on their expectation and needs. We are performing the full spectrum of spine surgery, including minimally-invasive techniques, adult deformity corrections, tumor resections, trauma care, and intradural surgeries. The candidate is expected to contribute to both clinical and research initiatives while developing advanced skills in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of spinal pathologies.

Since the fellowship program is based in a French institution, the candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the French language, spoken and written, in accordance with the politics of Université Laval for out-of-province candidates.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in a diverse range of spine procedures in the OR ;
  • Assist in the management of complex spine cases, including preoperative planning, intraoperative assistance, and postoperative care ;
  • Provide direct patient care in outpatient clinics, inpatient settings, and multidisciplinary spine clinics ;
  • Engage in multidisciplinary discussions with neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, pain specialists, radiologists, and physical therapists ;
  • Participate in spine-related clinical research projects and contribute to academic publications and presentations. Fellows are required to submit at least one manuscript for publication as a requirement of their fellowship ;
  • Attend weekly conferences, journal clubs, and educational seminars to further knowledge in spinal pathologies and surgical techniques.

The Winnipeg Spine Program is proud to offer a one year combined spine fellowship with mentors from both orthopedic and neurosurgical backgrounds. The fellowship offers a comprehensive experience in the management of degenerative conditions, trauma, tumors, deformity and pediatric spine surgery. We perform approximately 1200 spine cases per year.The spine fellowship is structured to allow fellows to rotate for 2-3 blocks with each spine surgeon at the University of Manitoba. It is expected that the spine fellow should be able to participate in 200-300 spine cases per year. In addition to operative cases, the fellow will be responsible for the assessment of patients in clinic and management of inpatients. The fellows will also be expected to participate in on-call duties.The Winnipeg Spine Program has created a robust educational curriculum to fulfill the needs of modern spine training. The Divisions of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada have two fellowship positions available in Spine Surgery. This high-volume fellowship is based at the Hamilton General Hospital (HGH) site of Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) which is a busy academic tertiary center for Neurosciences serving a catchment population of over 2.5 million Ontarians.

The fellowship is structured to allow trainees to rotate with surgeons in both Divisions. It is expected that the fellow will participate in over 300 spine surgeries per year. The fellowship will provide exposure to the full spectrum of spine surgery including degenerative pathology; deformity; trauma; metastatic tumors; primary tumors; infections; intradural pathology; and minimally invasive techniques. Hands-on learning is enhanced by a robust curriculum including didactic lectures, weekly spine rounds, M&M rounds and journal clubs. A contemporary and evidence-based approach to spine surgery will be emphasized throughout the fellowship.

Fellows will participate actively in research and academic activities and will be expected to complete two research projects during their fellowship year resulting in publication.

Pediatric: 50%Goals:The fellows will be assigned for 6 months on the pediatric spine service and 6 months on the adult spine service. The fellows will be involved in both surgical and nonsurgical care of patients, and participate in the teaching of residents, along with one of the six spine surgeons (Drs Khoueir, Jodoin, Labelle, Mac-Thiong, Maurais, Parent). At the pediatric hospital, emphasis is placed on the treatment of spinal deformity and spondylolisthesis. Training at the Level-1 trauma adult hospital encompasses a wide variety of spinal pathology, including trauma, deformity, tumors, and degenerative diseases of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. The fellows will also gain exposure with the attending staff in the neurosurgical department. Fellows will be exposed to both anterior and posterior approaches, as well as minimally invasive techniques such as thoracoscopy and minimal access surgery. Typically, the fellows will spend 2 days in the OR, 2 days in the clinic, and one full day for research. Weekly didactic educational conferences are also scheduled. Each fellow will participate in at least one clinical research project under the supervision of one of the three spine clinician-scientists. Basic science (imaging, biomechanics or molecular biology) research projects are also available. Applicants committed to an academic track will be highly considered. The duration of the fellowship is one year (August 1 to July 31) and the stipend is 40000$. French speaking is requested.

Spine Surgery (Orthopedic Surgery / Neurosurgery)

The Department of Surgery at the University of Montreal, in partnership with the CIUSSS du Nord-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, is inviting applications for a position of orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon specialized in spinal surgery. The CIUSSS NIM is one of the largest trauma centers in Quebec and has a mandate of expertise in the care of patients with spinal cord injuries. The main facility is the Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur-de-Montréal, an integrated tertiary trauma center. This facility serves a large population and is a referral center for the management of various spinal pathologies, including trauma, metastatic tumors, degenerative conditions, and spinal deformities. The spinal surgery service is a multidisciplinary clinical service including spinal surgeons, specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation (physiatry), specialists in internal medicine, specialized nurse practitioners, clinical nurses, and network nurses.

The Spinal Surgery Service is actively involved in university teaching, annually welcoming residents in orthopedic surgery and neurosurgery from the University of Montreal, as well as two to three clinical fellows. Fundamental and clinical research is an integral part of the spinal surgery service, with the participation of FRSQ researchers holding research chairs.

The Sprott Department of Surgery at University Health Network (UHN) is conducting a search for the next Head of Spine Program. We are seeking an academic surgeon to lead and implement a vision for a comprehensive spine surgery program at UHN. Description: The Division of Spine Surgery, Department of Surgery, Holland Bone and Joint Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is inviting applications for a mid-career academic full-time faculty spine surgeon with fellowship training covering spine trauma, spine oncology and spine degenerative conditions. This person will be the new Division Head of Spine Surgery. The effective date of this appointment is flexible, tentatively aiming for July 1, 2026. Applications should be submitted by November 15 2025.

The successful candidate should have a strong track-record of research productivity and clinical training with a focus on spine trauma, spine oncology, and spine degenerative conditions and a strong interest in leadership. It is expected that the candidate will establish an academic surgical practice and focus most of their clinical activity on spine oncology and spine trauma, with the remaining focused on elective spine degenerative surgery. Please note that a major deformity practice is currently not in line with the clinical priorities of the institution. In keeping with the academic focus of the Division and the Department of Surgery, the recruit will commit at least 50% of their time to formal academic and leadership activities. Evidence of excellence in teaching and research is required.

The successful candidate should have graduate level training in a relevant area of research that is aligned with Sunnybrook Research Institute’s programs or platforms in evaluative clinical sciences, biological sciences or the physical sciences (https://sunnybrook.ca/research/). Preference will be given to candidates with Master or PhD-level training. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research profile and contribute to the academic mission of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Holland Bone and Joint Program, Division of Spine Surgery, Department of Surgery, and Sunnybrook Research Institute. From a leadership point of view, the successful candidate must have a history of collaborative leadership in any forum and a strong track record of mentoring junior faculty and trainees. Opportunities to be cross appointed to the Division of Orthopedic Surgery or Division of Neurosurgery will be considered based on the candidates training.

Academic expertise in conducting clinical trials, health services research, quality improvement, education research, and translational ‘bench-to-clinic’ discovery research will be considered. As a member of the Department of Surgery and the University of Toronto, the candidate is expected to participate in education of learners at all levels.

The successful candidate will join an academic Division of Spine Surgery. The appropriate mid-career candidate for this hospital Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) position needs to be eligible for hospital appointment as Active Staff, as well as for a university appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto and be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians, Surgeons of Canada and licensed with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. The candidate must also be eligible for appointment as an Associate Scientist or Scientist in Sunnybrook Research Institute.

The hospital Division of Spine Surgery performs over 1000 elective spine cases annually. As one of the largest trauma hospitals in Canada, ~ 2000 ‘code trauma’ patients are managed through our Emergency Department annually. The hospital’s Holland Bone and Joint Program remains integral to Sunnybrook’s ecosystem supporting its Trauma activity, Cancer Program, and provides comprehensive orthopaedic care for patients with degenerative and inflammatory bone and joint conditions.

There are two Fellowship positions available in Spinal and General Neurosurgery commencing July of every year. The Fellowship will allow exposure to many aspects of complex spine surgery including minimally invasive techniques for degenerative disorders, trauma, oncology and adult spinal deformities.

The Fellowship will allow exposure to many aspects of of complex spine surgery including minimally invasive techniques, trauma, and adult spinal deformities. The fellow will have ongoing involvement in general neurosurgery including management of neurooncology and cerebrovascular pathology. The Fellow will participate in clinical, research, and operative activities. There are no on call requirements other than for surgical assisting. There will be the support of administrative personnel for research activities.

Remuneration includes a funded base salary as well as an incentivized fee for service salary structure. The Fellow must be eligible to obtain a full neurosurgery license in the Province of British Columbia (https://www.healthmatchbc.org/Physicians/Specialists/Licensing.aspx). Preference will be given to Canadian Neurosurgical graduates.
